The term 'Shrub Rose' is somewhat arbitrary and may lead to ambiguity.  The connotation being hardy & low maintenance, yet of lesser enhancement than the popular hybrid Teas.  Nothing is further from reality.

There is an inherent difficulty in separating modern from antique, ground covers from bushes, floribunda from shrub, landscape from garden roses and so on.  This category comprises of 'delegates' from many types of roses, past & present, with a single common denominator: "Garden Beautiful".

 

  • Agnes (HRug x foetida persiana, 1900) Amber with yellow base, saucer shaped, fragrant; once blooming in late spring; vigorous, thorny; dark coarse foliage; rambler or climber.  6' Z-4, B

  • Alba Meidiland (GC) Small white flowers produced in trusses on cascading canes; everblooming, double; vigorous, lush disease-resistant foliage; can be trained to trellis. 5x7', Z-4, B

  • Alba Semi-Plena (A, prior to 1600) White, semi-double fragrant flower, bossed with golden stamen; abundant red hips in fall. Vigorous plant with healthy gray-green foliage, once-blooming.  6', Z-4b, B

  • Altissimo see ‘Climbers’

  • Angela  (HMusk x K) The cupped silvery pink, semi-double flowers carried in trusses continually and have fruity scent.  Plant is vigorous and open with shiny lime-green foliage, which blend nicely with the flowers and has good shade tolerance; will benefit from good fertile soil for summer-long beauty. 5-7', Z-5, B

  • Antique 89 see ‘Climbers’

  • Apart New (HRug, 1981) Large cup-shaped pink fragrant flowers borne 10-15 per cluster on thick stem & produced repeatedly all season, followed by 1” red hips which add ornamental appeal; the stocky, vigorous plant has dense glossy, deep green foliage that is disease-free. Prefer semi-shade, well drained organic soil, slightly acidic. 4’4’, Z-2, B

  • Apothecary (R. Gallica Officinalis, before 1600) Medicinal, Rose of Lancaster.  Deep crimson, cupped, semi double flower with protruding yellow stamens, lasting 3-4 weeks. The attractive dark green dense foliage turns maroon in fall, paired with the scarlet hips for Grande Finale. 4’, Z-3, B

  • Astrid Lindgren Delicate apricot pink, semi-double cupped mid-size flowers with pleasing raspberry fragrance, produced in clusters all season atop long fleshy canes.  The erect plant bears medium green lush foliage with excellent texture and excellent disease resistance.  6-8’, Z-4b, B

  • Austrian Copper (R foetida bicolor, 16th century) Single flower has yellow reverse with coppery-red inside and golden ‘eye’. The vigorous spiny plant burst into bloom early in a massive display, bringing in mind the biblical “Burning Bush”. Notes: occasional reversion to all-yellow flowers does occur, of which we have no control of. 7', Z-4b, B

  • Autumn Sunset see ‘Climbers’

  • Baby Love RNRS GM (Min, 92) Rich yellow, single flowers produced continually on a short patio-type plant.  Use in foundation or small beds as a centerpiece.  1.5', Z-5, B

  • Ballerina  (HMusk) Masses of petite light pink single flowers produced on large trusses continually, followed with tiny hips which turn orange in fall; vigorous, open, arching canes; glossy foliage; shade tolerant.  5'x6', Z-4, B

  • Baronne Prevost (HP, 1842) Deep pink very double flower with strong damask fragrance; petals arranged in tight rosette around buttoned center strong fragrance.  Dusky foliage resembles Portland roses (Damask).  3-5', Z-4, B

  • Belle de Crècy (G, 1829) Rich pink with purple cast, fragrant; The lax vigorous bush has attractive deep green foliage typical of Gallica, which turns bluish-red in fall. The plant is vigorous and nearly thornless; trellising the long canes will enhance the beauty. 4-7’, Z-4, B

  • Belle Poitevine (HRug) Light lilac-pink, semi-double, opens flat; fragrant, repeat.  Bushy, vigorous, suckers profusely; dark green, disease-free foliage, fall colors, large red hips.  A choice shrub for city & country landscape; shade tolerant.  Z-3, 5’, A

  • Betty Boop (Fl, 1999) White edged bright scarlet with golden center, semi double, undulate petals; bloom abundantly in short cycles; Vigorous, bushy; glossy red tainted foliage. 4' Z-5, C

  • Blanc Double De Coubert 1892 (HRug) Snow-white, semi-double, fragrant flower set in tight clusters; plant has moderate vigor, spreading and bushy with good shade tolerance. The glossy, medium-green foliage is disease-free.  4’, Z-3, A

  • Bonanza New (KORmarie, 82) Yellow blend, rimmed red, semi double flowers produced on vigorous shrub in short cycles. The large bush is colorful throughout the season. 5’, Z-5 (4), B

  • Bonica AARS 1987 (GC) Soft champagne pink, becoming deeper toward the center; flowers are set in sprays and produced continually. The moderate vigor bush has spreading habit and is best used in groups; attractive glossy foliage has good disease-resistance.  3'x4'; Z-4b, B

  • Buff Beauty  see under ‘Climbers’

  • Camaieux   (G, 1830) Flower double blotched crimson over white, very fragrant; typical olive-gray foliage. Plant erect & bushy, suitable as hedge & flowerbed. 3’, Z-4, B

  • Cambridge ‘POULrust’ (98) Lavender-pink, small flower borne in large clusters against the backdrop of lush green, shiny foliage; blooms continually; disease resistant. 2', Z-4, B

  • Cardinal de Richelieu (G, 1840) Intense violet-purple aging deep Burgundy, fully double fragrant flower 3” across; dense olive-green foliage, almost thornless. 3’, Z-4, B

  • Carefree Delight AARS 1995 (GC) Light pink with yellow & white hues, blotched with red on reverse; the 1.5-2” single flower has jugged ‘dancing’ petals, and is carried in large sprays on arching canes continually.  The vigorous spreading bush has attractive glossy, disease-resistant foliage. Fall delivers bounty of hips. A choice landscape rose.  3'X5’, Z-4, B

  • Carefree Sunshine New (RADsun, 2001) Bright yellow single flowers produced in cluster in short cycles on a sturdy & vigorous plant; the contrasting lush green foliage is abundant and tidy, befitting group planting. 4-5’, Z-4, C

  • Carefree Wonder AARS 1991 This rose combines hardiness, disease resistance, free blooming and modern ‘classic’ form. The 3.5” double flower of deep pink with light pink reverse borne in small clusters on upright canes. The upright tidy bush has dark green foliage and is suitable for hedge. 4X3’, Z-4b, B

  • Celestial (Celeste, Aurore; A, ~1780) Soft shell pink, very fragrant cupped flower of exceptional grace. Plant is vigorous and bushy, with grayish foliage typical of Alba.  5-7’, Z-5, B

  • Celsiana  (D, 1732) Light pink, very fragrant, semi-double cupped flower. The plant has lax growth; flowers are produced in small clusters for several weeks in early summer.  3-5’, Z-4, B

  • Charles de Mills (Bizzare Triomphant, G, <1746) an obscure origin rose that is among the tallest of the Gallicas.  The sweetly scented, 4” flower is crimson-red, very double and dense with buttoned center and flattened outline.  4-5', Z-4, B

  • Chloris (syn.Rosé du Matin, A, <1820) Flower light pink, double, fragrant flower with typical buttoned boss, once blooming; coarse gray foliage, tall canes. 5’, Z-4, B

  • Chuckles (Fl, GC) The glowing orange red single flower (4”) with white 'eye', carried atop lax cane in large spray of 35-50 flowers; The plant has phenomenal productiveness which result in arching habit without support. To that end, it is recommended for close planting in groups. Makes excellent flower bouquet. 3'X4', Z-4, A

  • Comte de Chambord (P, 1860) Light pink, fragrant ‘buttoned’ flattish flower with many frilled petals, produced repeatedly and enhanced with dense deep green foliage. The vigorous plant blooms mainly during cool whether. 4'X3', Z-4, B

  • Complicata (G) Large deep pink with white 'eye' and yellow boss of stamen; single, saucer-like flower. The upright vigorous open plant can be trellised onto a fence to enhance appearance.  6', Z-4, B

  • Constance Spry see ‘Climbing’

  • Cornelia  (Cl, HMusk) Blend of yellow-red, rosette like small flowers produced on trusses throughout season. The plant is lax and viny, moderately vigorous and thornless; shade-tolerant.  5-6’, Z-4b, B

  • Countess Celeste ('Viking Princess', Olesen, 98) Orange-coral 3” flowers produced continually on a compact shrublet.  Attractive glossy foliage is dense and handsome. Excellent rose for border and containers.  2', Z-4, C

  • Crested Moss (Aka ‘Chápeau de Napoléon’, M, 1827) Unusual bud form, very ‘mossy’ foliage; pink very double, fragrant; 4’, Z-4, B

  • Dart’s Dash (HRug, GC) Crimson purple buds open to bright lilac purple, semi-double, very fragrant flowers, produced throughout the season and followed by large hips; The bush is spreading and dense with dark glossy foliage ending with a display of fall colors and is disease-free; tolerant of shade & salt conditions.  3'X4', Z-2, A

  • Delicata (HRug, GC, 1898) One of the earliest roses to bloom, the purplish-pink flower has nice fragrance and sets rose hip readily.  The plant is moderately vigorous, bushy and spreading; disease-free; tolerate salt & shady conditions. 4'X4', Z-2, B

  • Dornröschen (Sleeping Beauty) Brilliant salmon, 5” flower is high pitched double. Upright, vigorous bush blooms mainly during cool weather; may be pegged or trellised to enhance bloom.  6-8', Z-5, B

  • Dwarf Pavement (Zwerg, HRug, GC) Pink, fragrant, medium size, semi-double flowers; everblooming, produce bountiful crop of large hips; vigorous, spreading, bushy; glossy, disease-free foliage.  Excellent landscape and garden rose, tolerate salt condition.  3'X4', Z-3(2), A

  • Easy Going RNRS (Fl, 99) A sport of Livin' Easy; the round bud opens to deep yellow flower on a short stem and produced in large amount all season against deep green, glossy foliage.  Compact yet easy grower. 3', Z-4b, C

  • R. Eglanteria (Eglantine, Sweetbriar, R. rubiginosa, <1551) Small light pink scented flowers, followed by red hips; very tolerant of shade and well suited as trellis on fences. Long-lived. 6-8’, Z-4, B

  • Elveshörn (K, 85) Vivid rose-salmon, double, medium size flowers continually produced in large sprays on short branches; bushy, compact, spreading, very prolific; dark glossy, disease-resistant foliage; a splendid garden rose, prefer cool site.  3'X4', Z-4, B

  • Fairy Dance (Pol, GC, Harkness, 1980) Petite red flowers arranged in sprays atop lax shoots, produced continually from early summer against glossy deep green foliage; the short plant is suitable in flowerbed & container and exhibit good tolerance to foliar diseases. 1.5x3’, Z-5 (4), B

  • Fantin Latour (C, 1900) Noted for wonderful fragrance & ‘buttoned’ center typical of Centfolia; the light pink fully double flower appear in mid summer on tall plant, with modern textured foliage. 4-6’, Z-4 or 5, B

  • Fourth of July see ‘Climbing’

  • Foxi Pavement AEN (HRug, GC) Light purple fragrant flower with large boss of yellow stamen set against attractive dark green lush foliage; with bumblebees constantly at work, rose hips are abundant. The vigorous dense plant carries tight clusters continually; disease free foliage and ease of care, combined with fall display of colors make for a prime landscape rose.  4', Z-3(2), A

  • Frau Karl Druschki (White American Pillar, Cl, HP, 1901); Large bush or climbing rose; sumptuous, fragrant flower with sweet sent in the hybrid Tea form carried on vigorous cane; lush green, leathery disease resistant foliage, repeat.  Great for bouquets & trophies and a gem in the garden.  6-8', Z-5(4), A

  • Fru Dagmar Hastrup (HRug, GC, 1914) Soft flesh-pink, single, cupped flowers produced in tight clusters on compact, spreading plant; the attractive glossy foliage is disease free, finishing up with a wonderful show of fall colors, combined with handsome red hips. This all-time Danish favorite is the most adorned and enhancing shrub rose in northern gardens, unmatched in its beauty & versatility. 2.5x3.5, Z-2, B

  • Gabriel Noyelle (Moss, 1933) Apricot blend, recurrent, fragrant. B

  • General Jacqueminot (Gen. Jack, HP, 1853) Deep lavender-pink, double flower exudes sweet fragrance reminiscent of old garden roses (OGR).  The vigorous plant has dark foliage and but a few thorns. Recurrent.  5-6', Z-5, B

  • R. Glauca (Rubrifolia, purple-leaf rose, Sp) Light pink, single, small flowers produced in late spring and followed by oblong bright orange hips in late summer; non-recurrent.  The purplish-red foliage is useful as background or contrast; the shade tolerant plant has lax growth and good disease-resistance. 6-8', Z-2, A

  • Goldbusch see ‘Climbing’

  • Golden Wings Bright yellow, single, large flowers accentuated with orange stamen are set in small clusters in late spring and reappear occasionally throughout the season.  Plant is vigorous and open with light green foliage. 6'x6', Z-4, A

  • Gourmet Popcorn (86, ARS rating 8.7) Snow-white tiny flowers, bossed with golden stamen, burst open continually in small trusses, atop mounded cascading shrub.  The cascading mini shrub has dark green healthy foliage. Available both as bush & standard (36”). 1.5x1.5' Z-5, C

  • Grootendorst Supreme  (HRug) Dark magenta-red, small, carnation-like flowers carried in trusses atop spreading branches repeatedly; vigorous, spreading; medium-green foliage.  4'X5', Z-3, A

  • Hansa (Rug, 1905) Deep purple-crimson fragrant flower has ‘buttoned’ center and is carried on fleshy, spiny cane. The plant is large & open and requires little maintenance. It can often be found around old homesteads.  Suitable as screen, suckers profusely.  6', Z-2, A

  • Harison's Yellow (Hfoetida, 1830,Sp) If you have a fond memory of an old time yellow rose in the heartland, it is very likely that it was Harison’s. Sulfur yellow flowers cover the plant in late spring, followed by spheroid hips, which turn black in late summer. Long spiny canes have ferny small foliage; tolerate shade.  6', Z-3, B

  • Jacques Cartier  (Marchessa Boccella, P, 1842) Soft pink, double; tightly formed petals with heightened center, flat rosette shape and heady fragrance, repeat; upright, bushy; dense foliage, good disease resistance; superb garden plant for small areas and hedges.  3', Z-4, B

  • Joey’s Palaceä (POULjoey, 99) A patio-type miniflora; deep apricot –pink blend, double flowers carried in clusters on a compact plant. 2x2’, Z-5. B

  • Kaitlyn Ainsley New (HRug, 98) Semi double, mauve. Z-3, B

  • Knockoutä AARS (RADrazz, 2000) AARS Brilliant cherry-red single flowers produced in abundance all season in large clusters; color deepens in late fall.  The bushy spreading plant has attractive dark leathery foliage that is disease free. 3x3', Z-4b, B

  • Königin Von Dänemark  (Queen of D., A. 1826) Light pink, tight rosette shape flower, intensely fragrant, double, quartered; dense, bushy, upright; dark gray-green disease resistant foliage, typical of the class. Once-blooming.  4-5', Z-4, B

  • La Reine (HP, 1842) lustrous pink, very fragrant, double flower, cupped & double; carried on short stem.  Tidy bush resembling Portlands.  Flower longevity is exceptional.  Z-5, B

  • Lavaglut  (Fl.) Dark red clustered flowers are long-lived, blooming freely throughout summer. Good choice for mass planting. 3’, Z-5(4), B

  • Lavender Dreamä INTerlav (GC) Light lavender single flower has fresh scent Arching canes carry loads of flowers in trusses season long. The glossy attractive foliage is healthy & disease-free, the plant tolerate some shade. 5', Z-4b, B

  • Lexington (POUlgode) Light yellow edged white, slightly cupped flower borne in clusters. Plant is mounded and compact, producing continually on short branches. 2x2’ Z-4, B

  • Little Rambler (CHEwramb, Pol, 94) In a way, a new twist to old class of roses, or perhaps a climbing miniature. Crimson buds open to dainty pink flowers, set along lax canes in clusters and produced continually with delightful sweet fragrance. The pliable canes are easily trainable. 5-7’, Z-5, A

  • Livin' Easy ('Fellowship', Shrub-Fl) AARS 1996, RNRS GM; Orange blend, very buoyant & profuse; a winner of many awards worldwide.  Bushy & dense; glossy dark foliage, disease-resistant.  Excellent as low hedge and in container.  3', Z-6, C

  • Louise Odier (B, 1851) 3” double pink, rimmed-cupped flower, fragrant; blooms mainly in early summer with occasional rebloom; can be trained as climber. 6-10’, Z-6(5), B

  • Love & Peaceä (BAIpeace, AARS 2002 (HT) Like it’s acclaimed namesake, this rose combines vibrant color of gold & red with classy form & durable plant worthy a central spot in the garden. 4’ C

  • Lovely Fairy Sport of The Fairy, rose- pink flower heads produced continually; both hardiness & disease resistance are equal to that of the original ‘The Fairy’. 2.5 x 3.5’, Z-4, B

  • Macy’s Pride™ New (BAIcream, 2003) Creamy white overlaid with yellow, semi double flower. The erect bush has disease resistant foliage and is productive. 5’, Z-4, B

  • Madame Hardy (ar-Dee) (Damask, 1832) White, very double, medium, fragrant, once blooming; upright, vigorous, disease-resistant.  5', Z-4, B

  • Madison  ‘POULrijk’ ('Bayern', 98) Petite lavender-pink, double flowers cover the plant continually.  A colorful small rose sure to delight an outdoor setting & the vase . 1.5X3', B

  • Magic Meidiland® New (MEIbonrib) Robust healthy plant with delightful pink flowers against maroon glossy foliage; flowers produced continually on trailing canes that are easily trainable to a trellis; excellent disease resistance tops the fine qualities. 2.5x6’, Z4, B

  • Magnifica (Rug) Sparkling magenta flowers followed by large ornate hips; double, very fragrant and repeat; dense, bushy, prolific; dark glossy disease-free foliage; cheerful color display in fall.  4', Z-2, A

  • Maiden's Blush  (Alba 1797) The pale pink, rosette-shape fragrant flower with domed midpoint blooms in early summer; flowers set over several weeks and last for up to 10 days. The vigorous upright, bushy plant has gray-green foliage with good disease-resistance.  5-7', Z-4, B

  • Manhattan ‘POULharm’ (98) Abundant rich crimson red, semi-double flowers, set against dark green glossy foliage. Modest size plant adds sparkle anywhere around the house. 1.5x2.5', B

  • Marie Bugnet  (HRug) An unassuming, almost benign, nevertheless a beautiful and practical rose. White semi-double, 3.5” flower blends the Rugose and modern form, with strong fragrance, on compact bushy plant. The tidy plant is easily maintained, with few suckering branches, making it a choice medium size hedge rose. 3x2.5’, Z-3, B

  • Marjory Fair (Red Ballerina, HMusk) GM, Rome.  Dainty small, single red flowers with white ‘eye’, set continually in large trusses on vigorous arching canes.  Semi-glossy green foliage has good disease resistance. A shade tolerant plant, winning admiration from visitors to our rose garden.  5', Z-4, A

  • Martha's Vineyard ‘POULans’ (95) Hot pink, petite double flowers produced in huge clusters and great abundance continually.  Healthy foliage & vigorous plant.  The specimen in our trial garden (Z-3b) has been grown for two seasons with only minimal protection. 3x4', B

  • Mme Isaac Perriere (B, 1881) Cerise- pink globular bud open to perfectly quartered center, rimmed and very fragrant; in spite of its beauty this is tender rose requiring plenty of TLC and sunny warm weather to win trophy tables. Recurrent. 5’, Z-6, B

  • Moje Hammarberg (HRug, 31) (pronounced Mo'Ye Hamar-be-'Reeh).  Deep magenta large flower, double & very fragrant, blooms repeatedly and cleans well.  Beautiful lush glossy foliage holds it’s own show. The tidy vigorous plant is low in maintenance and has nice fall display. 4', Z-3, B

  • Mozart (Hmusk, 1937) Deep pink, small single flowers with white eye, carried in large trusses continually, on long arching canes, which make for beautiful sprays in bouquets; the dark green glossy, healthy foliage compliments the huge trusses. The plant is shade tolerant and hardy, easily trainable onto trellis. Named after the prolific composer, this rose entails just that. 5x6', Z-4, B

  • My Hero™ New (BAIhero, 2003) Red buds open to deep pink flowers, produced continually on a mounded bush; the plant has good disease resistance and qualified for group planting. 3’, Z4, C

  • Mystic ‘POULor’ (94) Salmon-pink, single to semi-double flowers, with white eye & golden button, shroud the plant 'around the clock'; glossy foliage is attractive by itself & as backdrop.  Displays well in the garden as in container.  1.5x2.5, B

  • Nearly Wild (Fl, GC) Radiating pink single, 3.5” flowers are set continually in clusters of 5-12, on compact everblooming shrub. The bushy, spreading, low-growing plant is exceptionally prolific and colorful, contributing to its high popularity.  2'X3', Z-4, A

  • New Dawn see ‘Climbing’

  • Orange Fire (Fl) As the name implies, this feisty 'Highway Department' colored flower has non-fading scarlet orange, semi-double flowers, produced in clusters continually.  The compact low growing, spreading bush has attractive glossy dark green foliage and is among the most popular roses in our garden.  2.5', Z-4b, B

  • Oranges 'n Lemons (Fl) Bright orange with yellow streaks, double, fragrant; vigorous, upright, very prolific; foliage is glossy and abundant, tinted maroon.  5', Z-5, C

  • Outta the Blueä (WEKstephitsu, 2002) Deep magenta turning yellow at the base in ‘old fashion’ modern rose both in form & fragrance. Flowers borne in short cycles in clusters, on mid size upright bush. 3-4’, B

  • Parkdirektor riggers see ‘Climbing’

  • Pierette Pavement (HRug, GC) The purplish bud open to bright magenta-lilac flower 4-5”, saturated with clove scent, petals arranged loosely around yellow center. The plant has lax growth with disease-free foliage and is shade & salt tolerant. 2.5x3.5', Z-2 or 3, A

  • Purple Pavement (Rotes Meer, HRug, GC) Vibrant violet-purple, non-fading semi-double flower with accentuating yellow boss awash with strong fragrance. The dense green foliage is disease free, providing attractive show of colors come fall. The bushy and rather compact plant has spreading habit, producing tight clusters from spring to late fall, followed by a massive display of red rotund hips.  Z-2, 3x5x4’, A

  • Ramblin’ Redä see ‘Climbing’

  • Raubritter new (Hmacrantha, 1936) Dainty pink flowers 3” cupped perfumed flowers, engulf the short plant for 3-4 weeks in early summer in owesome display. 1.5x1.5’, Z-4, B

  • Red Fairy (Moore, 1998, HMusk) Improvisation on 'The Fairy' theme; light crimson, small, double flowers arranged in trusses and produced generously season-long.  Moderately vigorous, cascading; dark green foliage.  2X4', Z-5, B

  • Riene des Violettes  (HP, 1860) Deep purple, rosette shape flower coupled with strong damask fragrance on vigorous healthy plant makes a lasting impression of a summer treat.  Add the hardiness of the shrub for outstanding specimen. Flowers produced in short cycles until late frost conclude. 5', Z-4, B

  • Robin Hood (Hmusk, 1927) Cherry-red, double, small flower; continual procession of bloom produced on panicles.  Vigorous, bushy; dark leathery & healthy foliage; tolerate shade.  A splendid garden rose.  4', Z-4, B

  • Robusta (HRug x K) Sparkling red flowers carried on long thorny stems from early summer till late fall, embellished by glossy dark reddish green foliage. A vigorous and unique shrub, that differs markedly from any other Rugosa hybrid in color, form and texture. Despite shortcomings in hardiness and disease tolerance, remains a popular choice among gardeners; tolerate some shade.  6-8', Z-5, A
