The Canadian rose breeding program combines hardiness & repeat bloom.  The Parkland series comes from Morden station, Manitoba (Z-2 or 3).  The Explorer series originated from Ottawa, Ontario (Z-3 or 4) & tested at both that and L'Assomption, Quebec locations.  

Information on the individual cultivars is also provided in a full-colored bulletin: 'Winter Hardy Roses' , Pub. # 1922/E ($4.00 + $1.00 S&H).

 

  • Alex MacKenzie (Explorer) Large bush or climbing; red, double bloom set in cluster on tall slender cane. The plant is vigorous, open and disease resistant. 5-8', Z-4(3), A

  • Capt. Sam Holland see ‘Climbing’

  • Champlain (Explorer) Scarlet flowers carried in large clusters continually; modest vigor, spreading bush with dark leathery foliage, moderately susceptible to mildew.  3'x4', Z-4(3), A

  • Charles Albanel  (Explorer, HRug) Bright magenta fragrant flowers produced in clusters on short branches all season.  Bushy, spreading bush with dense, salt & disease resistant.  Practical rose for harsh climates.  3'X4', Z-2, A

  • Cuthbert Grant  (Explorer) Large velvety red flowers in HT mold, imbued with strong sweet scent uncommon among the Explorer series, form early on and repeat in fall. The upright, vigorous plant is suitable for flowerbed and as hedge.  4'X3', Z-3, A

  • David Thompson  (HRug, Explorer) Crimson, semi-double fragrant flowers produced atop short branches successively; medium vigor, bushy; disease-free.  3X3', Z-3, A

  • De Montarville (Explorer, 98) One of the finest everblooming roses among recent introductions; the compact plant is covered with clusters of mid-size flowers of glowing chartreuse pink. The bush has excellent disease resistance and is very suitable for mass planting as short hedge, as well as flowerbeds. 3', Z-3, B

  • Frontenac (Explorer, 92) Bright non-fading pink flowers carried on upright vigorous bush all season. Excellent disease resistance.  4-5', Z-3, B

  • George Vancouver  (Explorer, 94) Bright medium red, tightly clustered flowers carried on slightly trailing long canes. The rugged and very hardy plant has excellent disease resistance and is free flowering; when planted close together it creates a formidable yet beautiful barrier.  3'X4', Z-3, B

  • Henry Hudson  (explorer, GC, HRug) Pink buds open to white, semi double flower bossed with yellow center, which carries typical Rugosa fragrance. Everblooming in tight clusters. The narrow foliage is dark glaucous green and dense. The bushy spreading plant offers reliably hardy groundcover for harsh Northern climates.  3X4', Z-3, A

  • Henry Kelsey see ‘Climbing’

  • Hope for Humanity (Parkland, 98) Blood-red flowers with modern look, carried on tall, bushy plant all season. Dark green foliage accentuates the flowers and has good disease resistance. A recent introduction by the Canadian Red Cross.  5', Z-3, B

  • J P Connell (Parkland) Light yellow bud open to creamy yellow, double, repeat.  The vigorous upright bush has dark green foliage. Plant is susceptible to blackspot but very hardy.  5'x4', Z-3, A

  • Jens Munk (HRug, Canadian) Sprite pink, cupped, semi-double flowers with pronounced yellow stamen and typical Rugose fragrance produced in short cycles and tight clusters atop long spiny cane; The vigorous, dense bush is effective barrier, blooming mostly during cool weather. Excellent disease-resistance with lush glossy foliage. 6', Z-3, A

  • John Franklin (Explorer) Magenta red, double flowers produced in early summer and repeat through the season.  Dark green dense foliage enhances the bloom on a bushy, free branching plant.  4', Z-3 A

  • Lambert Closse (Explorer, 95) This rose offers unsurpassed beauty for Northern gardens. The salmony-pink flower has pointed, perfectly formed bud with recurving petals, sweetheart-style flower borne freely on upright, bushy plant; disease-resistant glossy foliage. Attention trophy-hunters. 4’, Z-3, B

  • Marie-Victorin (Explorer, 98) Recent introduction from the Canadian breeding program. Peach-pink blend flowers produced continually on long canes.  The plant is spreading and vigorous with healthy foliage complimenting the flowers.  May be used as a short climber.  5', Z-3, B

  • Martin Forbisher (Explorer, HRug) Soft pink, double, fragrant flowers are set in tight clusters; repeat; vigorous, upright, very hardy; a good choice for border or screen.  5-6', Z-2, A

  • Morden Blush (Parkland) Light pink, mid-size flowers produced in large clusters; double and attractive; everblooming.  Upright, bushy plant with moderate vigor and disease-resistant.  A choice garden & landscape rose.  4', Z-3, B

  • Morden Centennial (Parkland) Deep pink, large, semi double flowers produced all season on a large and open bush.  Vigorous, disease resistant plant, a favorite landscape and garden rose.  5'x6', Z-3, A

  • Morden Fireglow  (Parkland) Brilliant red-orange, semi-double flower carried in tight clusters; moderately vigorous, upright and prolific; prone to Blackspot.  4'X3', Z-3, B

  • Morden ruby  (Parkland) Light red, double, blooms in clusters; upright, open, vigorous, repeat; practical choice for hedge or screen.  4', Z-3, A

  • Morden Snowbeauty  (Parkland, 99) Clusters of white flowers hug the plants throughout summer, creating a blanketing effect when used as mass planting. Deep green foliage coupled with good disease resistance makes for a choice landscape rose. 3x4’, Z-2. B

  • Morden Sunrise (Parkland, 99) this is the first hardy yellow rose in the Canadian program to be released. Semi-double fragrant yellow flowers are carried in clusters throughout the season. The plant is blackspot resistant and is ideal for mass planting. 3’, Z-3, C

  • Prairie Joy (Parkland, 90) The many-petalled lovely old-fashioned style flower is carried atop upright strong cane. The vigorous plant with disease free dense foliage is upright, bushy and very hardy. Spectacular prolonged bloom with some repeat. One of the most maintenance-free and rewarding roses we have seen. 5', Z-3, B

  • Quadra new see ‘Climbers’

  • Royal Edward (GC, Min, Explorer) This rose combines hardiness, disease resistance and free flowering on a short spreading plant, similar to ‘patio’ or ‘Miniflora’ type. Medium size pink flowers produced from spring till frost. May be used for foundation or along walking trail. 1.5'X2, Z-3, B

  • Simon Fraser (GC. Explorer) Everblooming shrub rose with compact stature. The red pointed bud turn reddish-pink when open. Foliage has good disease resistance.  Choice garden & landscape rose for Northern gardens. 2', Z-3, B

  • Winnipeg Parks (Parkland) Bright rose to red, pleasing tea fragrance, medium size double flower on a compact upright plant; bloom plentifully in short cycles; its modest size befit flower beds as well as short hedges. 2.5', Z-3, B
